People, joy and pain

Estimated Reading Time: < 1 minute

I wanted to create images capturing human emotion. I was looking for joy, hope, reflection, sadness, amongst others. It was hard to know where to start. Images capturing human emotion are by definition very personal. In the end the media gave me an idea.

I read many articles in the media about World War II and the 75 year anniversary of D-Day. I wanted to see for myself and went to visit the beaches and cemeteries. There are many good documentaries and films about the war. They didn’t prepare me for the scale of being there in real life. I wanted to pay tribute and the memories of the US, Canadian, Commonwealth and German soldiers who died in World War II.  Sadly there are many cemeteries. I visited 4 in Normandy, France. The memorials to dead soldiers are only part of the atmosphere in Normandy. Many of the of the images on this page relate to these wars. I hope to expand the subject matter going forward. For example I recently added the Statue of Liberty.

I have made some photos available for purchase on my Adobe Stock store or via the menu above.

In the cemeteries yu may notice that each nation has a different approach to the headstones. The American headstones take the form of a cross, for example, for Christian victims.
